The Great Schilens Debate

As the bye week gets into full effect, the Oakland Raiders are looking to improve on the overall health of the team with many key positions. You have Nnamdi with the ankle, Henderson with the foot, Miller with the foot, and the most anticipated and oft injured Chaz Schilens and the knee, or is it knees? Or is it a foot? Or is it.......oh God I give up.

Lets get into who this notorious WR is that seems to be on the Al Davis scholarship.

Chazeray "Chaz" Schilens  is a 25 year old 6'4", 225 WR, with similar physical stature to Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Super Chokers. Schilens was a seventh-round pick out of San Diego State in 2008. His contract was signed on 7/17/2008 for four-years @ $1.755 million. The deal included a $50,000 signing bonus.
His yearly salary will be 2010: $470,000, 2011: $555,000, 2012: Free Agent.

After being drafted by the Raiders, Schilens played his first game against  the Denver Broncos where he caught two passes for 29 yards. Schilens got his first taste as a starter on October 19, 2009  vs. the New York Jets. In his first year, Schilens played in all 16 games, six of those as a starter. See his 2008 stat line below.

Schilens finally made his 2009 debut in a game against the Chiefs in Week 10 where he had 3 Rec. for 27 yards in a 16-10 loss. Schilens finished out the month of November with 7 Rec. for 100 yards, and bettered in December with 14 Rec. for 166 yards and two touchdowns. In the final game of the 2009 season against the Baltimore Ravens, Schilens hauled in eight passes for 99 yards, a career high, and the Raider Nation fell in love!

Here is his Career stat line:

2008

15 Rec. 226 Yards 2 TD's

2009

29 Rec. 365 Yards 2 TD's

Injuries

On August 18, 2009, Chaz broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot in a non-contact drill during an intra squad scrimmage against the 49ers and he subsequently missed half of the ’09 season. Upon his return, he had 29 catches for 365 yards and two touchdowns, but needed another operation after the season to help the foot fully heal.

During the pre season of 2010, the Raiders had high expectations of their wide receiver corps, with a returning Chaz playing the 1, DHB playing the 2 and Louis Murphy at the 3. That was until August of this preseason, when we found out the Schilens injured his foot during practice. When head coach Tom Cable was interviewed about the injury, he said it was that Chaz was just just pushing a little too much and hurt his foot again. They took it easy on him and upon his return to practice and two a days, the injury bug bit again when Chaz injured his knee. Cable said the knee injury was likely a result of overcompensating for the foot injury and he underwent a "minor procedure" to clean up the knee.

After week upon week of pressing questions and the press asking Cable about the injury and rehab, it was finally acknowledged that Chaz Schilens' August knee surgery wasn't just a simple scope as he originally led us to believe.
"I think the procedure that was done was not something real minor or anything like that," said Cable "It was fairly extensive, so it takes time."

Damn I hate a liar.

"He is on the field working now," coach Cable said in a week 5 interview. "There's no running, nothing quick twitch. (We're) just trying to get him back on his feet."
I mean come on, Schilens was only expected to miss 3-6 weeks after undergoing the knee surgery. Can someone say scholarship?

Our Achilles hell this year has been the wide receiver position. DHB sat out of the 3rd scrimmage game with what was called "fatigue" after a promising pre season and has been more then inconsistent during the first 9 games of the season. Louis Murphy has been a little more consistent during the season, but has been slowed by a collar bone injury he sustained against San Diego and a bruised lung that has kept him out since the San Francisco game. Without the unsung hero, Jacoby Ford who singlehandedly willed the Raiders in the win at home against Kansas City, its safe to say this wide receiver corp has been a huge disappointment.

Back to Chaz....what is it about this guy that is so amazing that the Raiders are wasting a roster spot to keep this guy on the payroll? Terrel Owens was available, and we passed. Michael Crayton was available, and went to the Chokers. Hell even Randy Moss was a free agent and we could have placed a waiver claim on him, but we passed.

So I did a little homework and found this highlight video of Chaz. Yes, you heard it right, a highlight video of Chaz.

To be quite honest with you, I am tired of waiting for this guy, as promising as he may be. Let me know what you think. Your comments and opinions are important!

This Team Believes!

Big wins don't come often in this league for the Raiders, as most times when we have been down over the past 7 years, we stay down and roll over as who ever the competition steam rolls us at the finish line. For longer then I care to remember, this has been the case. Well ladies and gentlemen, those days are long gone and we are riding the success of a 3 game winning streak, and it looks like those days of old have finally seen our backside and given us a kiss on our arse as we go on our way.

With 2 dominating statistical victories over the previous 2 weeks, an unstoppable Raiders offense, piling up 1,053 yards with ease and our defense allowing just 405 yards and 17 points, we started to take on the image of an immovable force that was to be reckoned with. Well, I think they lived up to the hype this week and showed that there are things in the works here that we as fans can't even really see. We did not back down to the over rated Chiefs when they came pounding on our doorstep right before the half. We didn't cower when the ref's made call after call that went against us when we all know if it was some other team, the call would have went their way. We did not back down from the league who said they wouldn't buy into the hype, like they did all week on the NFL Network in their show the Playbook, BSPN's Countdown, and all of the other Media Outlets who refuse to pay attention because of their hate for the Raiders.

Believe it now SUCKERS!!

Here are the catalysts to our success in the Chaotic View.

Tom Cables message all year has been to cut it loose. Let it go and have fun. Well, that seems to be working and the backyard ball the Raiders are playing is breeding feelings of confidence this team has not had in years. And remember, this is a different energy because this team is now one of the youngest in the league, versus the 2002 team that was the oldest of that time. Look at these quotes from Tom Cable....

“We can’t sit around here and feel like, gosh, what a great effort, this and that, or execution and all that. It was a tremendous but it’s just not very clean. What did happen today, a new building block showed up today. And that is, no matter what, no matter how long it takes, we just keep grinding and find a way. And that’s what we did. The thing I’m so, so pleased about was to see us on the sideline and to just feel it, like nobody was backing down, nobody was giving in, and we were just going to keep finding a way. I kept seeing the offensive guys pull for the defensive guys, and vice versa. And it really mattered down there at the end.”

Tell me this isn't the mindset of a humble coach who has his hand on the true vibe of the players on the field. For a coach to notice that we are under performing, and yet still see that stuff going on is huge and shows that the pulse of the team is Tom Cable.

“A new building block showed up today,” Oakland coach Tom Cable said. “And that is, no matter what, no matter how long it takes, we just keep grinding and find a way. And that’s what we did. The thing I’m so, so pleased about was to see us on the sideline and to just feel it, like nobody was backing down, nobody was giving in, and we were just going to keep finding a way.”

The fighting ways of the Raiders are back. A scrappy bunch of misfits, who no one believes in from the outside world, but we will punch you in the face and knock you on your ass until you recognize us. Be ready world, we are not done yet.

Players Swagger

Who means more to the Raider Nation, then this 53 man roster and the boys on the practice squad? Their effort is evident. Their will to win is immaculate. Their no guts no glory approach is inspiring and their perception of each other is forming a cohesion, that like the wedge on a kickoff return, can prove to be impenetrable.

Mike Mitchell-

“You see it. I don’t know what it was like a few years ago, but I can tell you last year we don’t win this game,” said Mitchell. " I can say that with 100 percent assurance. You can see the change. Guys, when we got down (last year), it was almost like, Here we go. It’s over, but this year, we don’t care. We’re going to play you until there’s no time on the clock. We’re going to play you, and we’re going to fight you as hard as we can, and that’s what coach Cable has us believing, that’s what we’re doing, and that’s the team we are.”

Trust is a big thing in this league. Trusting the man next to you is doing their job breeds confidence that you don't have to do too much. That is leading to better execution on both offense and defense as guys don't over pursue to make up the negligence of their teammate.

Marcel Reece-
"I commend our defense, because they play lights out night in and night out. One thing that we had to do was try and match their intensity, match their confidence, and match their execution."
Wow. So competition from the opposite side of the ball is taking shape. Remember last year when Jamarcus would go out and flop the game on the offensive side of the ball, and the entire defense was saying, "We just have to carry the team and allow the offense the chance to get the ball again and hope they score some points" Interesting their competing with one another during the game, which shows they are having fun. So important.
Tommy Kelly-

“The Raiders are back,” Kelly said. “Yep, the Raiders are back. We’ve won three in a row. We just had a come-from-behind win against a division leader. We’re back, man.”
Richard Seymour-
"Everybody is starting to see, when we play together the things that we can accomplish. It doesn't matter what the score is, we just continue to fight."

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is coming from a Superbowl Champion of the current NFL Era. I think his words are quite evident that the team is moving in the right direction and progressing the way that the New England Cheatriots did when they started to believe and went on their recent run of superior play. They should have still lost the Tuck Rule game, so no props to them.
It was a damn fumble!

61,075 fans in the Hole!
Our first sellout in 12 games dating to the 2009 season opener against the San Diego Super Chokers.
Some quotes from an article on the SF Gate from the Nation....
"We're not back," the Gorilla Rilla said. "We never left." I would love if that were true. Some fair weathered fans are jumping on the band waggon, but that's OK, there is plenty of room.
"The fans were off the hook," Raiders coach Tom Cable said. "That's what it's about when a team connects back with its fan base. They're just going to get bigger from here on out."
"It feels like the Rich Gannon days," Dr. Death said. "You just feel the energy. The team has stepped up their game. It's time for us to step up our game."
"The Raider Nation is back", the Violator said. "Be very afraid, A sleeping dog has awakened."

You Want Respect? You Have To Take It!

This is a must win game! No If's, And's or But's about it!
Do you understand that Raider Nation? Hell, do you understand Raider Players and Coaches?

Losing this game would be the worst thing to do at this time. This isn't just for the AFC West standings. This isn't just for records and rankings in the NFL. This is for RESPECT! Something this Raider Organization, nor the Raider Nation have had in 7 years!
Losing this game is not something you want to do. This game is going to be a sell out. Rolando McClain and Tom Cable, you asked for it, the Raider Nation answered. All year we have been waiting for the chance to be hyped up about a winning streak and guess what, we are riding your efforts on a 2 game murderfest that has us hungry for more.

I am absolutely amped up for this game, and it is only Thursday! I am sure, as you read this Nation, you feel the same!

Look, simply put,

IF YOU FAIL US RAIDERS, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL LOSE A TON OF SUPPORT FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR! THIS GAME IS THAT PIVOTAL!

There is ABSOLUTELY no way the Chiefs come into our house this year, and pull out a win. I don't give a S*IT how good their damn record is. It means nothing when they come into our house. Its us against the world and this is your time to prove that we are ready to stand united against them all.

Forget the records. Forget the 2 wins against Seattle and Denver. Throw out all of the success and losses. This game right here in week 9 will say it all.

EITHER PUT UP OR SHUT UP!

We are tired of being let down by all the hype and then falling flat on our faces for the last 7 years.

ITS TIME TO WIN NOW!

This is what we are all after......
Our Return To Glory!

Just Win DAMN IT!

I'm looking for feedback from the Raider Nation to be incorporated into this blog. Leave a comment below. They are always welcomed and appreciated.

Gradkowski or Campbell???? The Burning Question!

After hearing Tom Cable in his press conference on Monday so confident that Bruce Gradkowski is our quarterback for the team once he is healthy, I can completely understand his stance.

He made the change when Campbell wasn't playing to the expectations of the team. So I ask myself, as a football junkie and someone who understands the game, why would Cable answer that question with so much confidence for a hurt quarterback, when this team has put up back to back 500 yard games, the most points in team history with 59, and almost blanking the Sea Chickens 33-3 at home.

My simple answer - The Playbook.

Its obvious that Gradkowski has more of the coaches ear because he understands the expectations of  Cable more. He has been in this system for 3 years now, and knows what Cable and Davis expect from the quarterback position. Campbell, doesn't. Its evident in the play calling and execution of the plays and the consistency they play with. Tough thing though is I am not on the field to see what is going on during practice, so we don't see the progressions like Cable and the staff do.

After digging through the teams throwing attempts trying to find the answer I may have found it.

The Vertical Offense.

Gradkowski has thrown more balls beyond 20 yards versus Campbell, who came from a west coast system of dinking and dunking and has the arm  but not the mindset to get the ball down the field. That is until recently.

Simply put, Campbell doesn't understand the entire concept of stretching the field vertically which will open up more lanes for the running game to smash through to the second level, because opposing teams can not keep 8 in the box.

I know for a fact that this type of West Coast Offense frustrated the hell out of Davis during the Gruden era, because you can tell based on the fact that Gruden was traded to the Bucs for a draft pick, even with his success.

Ahhhh These were the days!

Some input from the Raider Nation:

BSPN-

"Well deserved. 27-47, 514 yards, 4 TD's & 0 INT's last 2 weeks. Lets hope he can continue this great play vs KC."

Inside the Oakland Raiders-

"Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:
I trust Cable/Hue/Hackett to choose the correct starting QB. I also trust Cable to stick to his tagline about Grads so that the topic does not blow up in the media. Smart."

"inonewordraider Says:
Grads didn’t even get snaps in last weeks practice so Campbell should go this week, if he continues to play like the last two games ride him, Grads is the kind of guy that could step in at moments notice and Campbell has the higher ceiling and let’s not stop him from possibly reaching it"

The Trap!

After a huge win against a Divisional team, what's the first thing our Raiders do? They take an extra day off. For many of the players, its a well needed break from the long season, even if it is just for a day. They can do the things that you and I do, live a normal life. Some make their way into the weight room, some seek out treatment, while others kick their feet up and watch a little TV and rest their bumps and bruises.

So I asked myself, what do champions do after a big victory? Well, just because I strive to be the best at everything I do I can say that there are no breaks if you want to compete on a high level. There are no breaks if you want to be champs.

So where is the trap in this mindset for our Raiders? Well simply put, they get too relaxed. They accept that they won and think its just going to happen next week the same way it did Sunday. Sorry to break it to you boys, but the Seattle Sea Chickens are coming to town carrying the NFC West Division lead (4-2) into our house and they're not going to just roll over and hand us a victory.

This week has to be the difference in this year if we expect to become a playoff contender. My challenge more so to this team is directed at these coaches. Tom Cable in particular. We haven't done anything yet Tom. I expect that you are going to slam these men for the mistakes we made during the last game. False starts, illegal motion, missed catches, miss alignments on defense and yards left on the field shows you there are things that can be fixed. But more importantly, I want you to pound their psyche. I want you grabbing their face masks during practice when they drop a ball. I want you having them working on fumble drills. I want you to put an emphasis on the Red Zone again this week. TD's not field goals! They should be so damn angry from practice that they come out and kick the crap out of the Sea Chickens. Here is an idea, before the game, show them the loss to the Niners. A full cut up of the disappointment. Show them the loss to Tennessee and how we allowed a team to pound on us. Show them the loss to the Texans and how they gashed our run defense over and over and over again. Then follow it up with the Victory over the Chokers. Show them the video from this last weekend against the Donkos. Show them how we kicked the crap out of them and then say this phrase to them:

"DON'T TALK ABOUT IT,  BE ABOUT IT!"

These players can not be given a free pass to have an easy week of practice. Last time I looked at our record, we're still 3-4.

So I say to you Tom, if you expect the Nation to fill the stadium, prove what you say on the field. Prove that the team is moving forward and another let down isn't on the horizon. I love my team as do all Raider Fans, but I trust you further then I can throw Richard Seymore. Not far.

Ill take a quote from Field of Dreams, "If you win, they will come"

Just Win Baby!

TIME TO STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND START BEING ABOUT IT!!!

It was glorious. The kind of wins that go down in the record books for the ages to look back and see forever. A 59-14 domination of the helpless Denver Broncos. The Raiders rushed for 328 yards in the win — just 28 yards shy from the team record of 356 set in '87 against Seattle on the road. The quarterback play was calm and poised. The lineman held their blocks. The wide outs blocked down field and Nick Miller went up over the top on a 32 yard reception to haul in the pass. The defense held the Broncos to 75 yards rushing as a team. Talk about a total team effort!

But my fellow Raider faithful, that’s where it needs to go and stay. In the books. Case closed, chapter ended, next story.

Far too often we focus on the wrong thing only to be set up for failure. The proverbial, lets go 2-0 and get this rolling. Man, that’s for high school athletes. How about, let’s go out there and kick the crap out of the Sea Chickens now? Who is next to take this wrath?

LET GO OF THE RECORDS!

This game against Denver was the kind of game we should play week in and week out. Can you imagine if the Raiders played this way every week? We should!

I remember back to the period of time between '98-'02 seasons, we would go into every game saying, who is next to get a loss against us? We couldn't be stopped by anyone. Now all we say is damn, can we beat this team? Is our defense going to hold up? Is our offense going to get more then 10 first downs? Can we put 100 yards up on the ground?

REMEMBER THE PAST!!

To wrap this up, an important message from Tom Cable to the Raider Nation: "Raider Nation, hear me," Cable said. "We need you in those stands supporting us. We need to have a great 12th man from here on out because we're doing our part. It's coming together." Tom, you’re right. It is coming together. We beat a really good football team yesterday. Now do your job and coach these men to play next week with the same tenacity as they did on Sunday!

TIME TO STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND START BEING ABOUT IT!!!

Welcome to the home of the most upfront, in your face, realistic and honest feedback about my beloved Oakland Raiders you can get anywhere on the net.

This blog will be dedicated to all Raider Fans from around the world!

The Raiders. What more can you say about the name Raiders? Passionate fans (Look at my profile picture). The colors Silver and Black together say class and style. The mystique, Legendary. This team is the team of all teams. Sports Empires were built on the Raider way. Quick, fast talented athletes poised to infuse youth and vigor into the new year along with the witty and savvy veterans, back to prove they still have what it takes for another year.

Jamie Squire/Getty Images

Ill begin my rants on our current administration. You have the hard nosed Tom Cable at the helm. Tough, gritty, offensive line coach used to duking it out in the trenches. His passion for the game is unquestioned, his ability to adjust to game tempo on the fly, immaculate! His ability to lead........Questionable. As of week 6 of the 2010 NFL Season, his record as a Professional NFL Head Coach, a whopping 10-21. The 2nd longest tenured coach since "Chucky", following the likes of Bill "The Dumbest Team" Callahan, Norv "Choker" Turner, Art "Bed in Breakfast" Shell, , and we all know Lane "Lance" Kiffin. Tom Cable, our leader, Al's punching bag.

Tom has made comments week in and week out such as, "We just didn't execute.", "Where are we at? I think we’re about three-quarters of the way there. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting there.""We have the same feeling similar to what we had after the Arizona game, where you felt like you did a lot of things to win a game and didn’t do enough to get it over the hump to do it." "For us, it was just a play away, a play away, a play away. And you’re trying to get to the right play, and your team in position for the right play. But that’s not good enough.". Well damn it Tom, when are we going to execute? When are we going to get the play in? When are we going to get the quarterbacks to play at the level they are paid for? When are we going to get over the hump?

Personally, I am tired of sitting back waiting for the team to turn the corner. I am tired of getting my stomach in knots every Sunday hoping we have it in us to drive down the field in the 4th quarter and pull off a miracle. I want DOMINATION! I want a comfortable lead! I want to actually HIT SOMEONE IN THE MOUTH the entire game and make them fear playing this team. I want the Raiders to be the team people hate because we Dominate and Win!

Tom you're the head coach. You're responsible for the Offense, Defense and Special Teams. All parts and pieces. Every player out of position. Every "Missed Opportunity". Players not being conditioned for the rigors of the year. It all falls on your shoulders Tom. My opinion of this current team..........they play as they are coached, soft!
